TRESTLES

To do Trestles and the Wedge in one day is a special day indeed. What can you say about Trestles that hasn't already been said, it is amazing place to visit. As I said earlier it is hard to go on and on in writing about how awesome these places are because for too many people it's just the backyard but to this visiting Limey it was a pilgrimage to somewhere I wanted to visit for a long time. Just the whole experience is great. Jumping out of the car with my backpack on, camera packed inside at the ready, my monopod in hand and a skateboard under my feet. I scooted off down the mile long track of semi rough tarmac that gets you to the railway tracks at the end. I picked up quite a lot of speed and it was pretty sketchy on the sandy blacktop. I thought a couple of times I was going to go sprawling and face plant with camera gear scratching along the ground. Luckily I made it to the bottom and stopped at the railway tracks unscathed. Trestles are what Americans call the props that hold up a railway bridge, the wooden Trestles here were replaced by concrete in 2012.
It is a pretty good surf day, not the best but not the worst. It was super cool autumn swell and people that I talk to on the final stretch of walk by the train track bridge said that It will be best to see some pros and some good guys down at Lowers. It works like this from the south upwards you have Church then Middles then Lowers, next is Uppers and lastly Cotton. There is a full array of waves and left and rights but Lowers is almost smack in the middle and that's where you can find a lot of good things going off. I rocked up and got my camera out straight away. The session was in full swing. Most people make their way down there with electric bikes with the big tires and a surfboard hooks on the side There was dozens of these parked up and to my left I could see the landmark that I've come to associate with Trestles, it’s the nuclear tits of San Onefre. The double domes power plant with nipples on top made famous in The Descendents song Kids “ Went driving down to San Diego Passing by the nuclear tits” and in the movie Naked Gun when Frank Drebin cannot stop thinking about Pricilla Presley!
A Wednesday afternoon and people are bunking off work early, if they do work at all. It is a good day, one of the nice above-average swells for October and I couldn't think of anywhere else in the world I would like to be right now. My shutter is working overtime and I am popping off photos left right and centre. I even get a standout pro without realising it because I'm not very good at names and faces at the moment but I do know a good surfer when I see one. Patrick Gudauskars is the guy. Every wave he catches he turns into a banger. There are lots of groms and people coming up through the ranks to push this session higher than any I've seen anywhere until now. Trestles really is the breeding ground.

Young Rippers abound

I stay until dusk hoping that the Sun will crack through the hanging grey cloud that has blocked out some of the light. Packing up is a sad thing for me but I hung around as late as I could. People start leaving and the trail back up is the long trudged path but I do have a big smile on my face. As I reach the top I pass something I didn't really take much notice of on the way down. It is a Jersey barrier that has been commandeered by skateboarders. Nobody is on it right now and I haven't got the strength of legs left in me to have a go myself but I pack the car and lock it up and get over to Carl Juniors and fill my face with a long overdue feed. Some people will be back tomorrow but I won’t. I will be on to the next place but this was an epic day as this is what I am trying to convey. If you live locally to Trestles you may not realise how amazing it is. You are truly blessed with one of the best surf spots in Southern California.
Long live Trestles.
